Hi Laura! I'd heard the Scheveningen pronunciation story before, and I have no idea if it's an urban legend or not. And yes, "the war" requires no translation, at least not in my family. In particular, "voor de oorlog" (before the war) means "in the good old days, before everything got so expensive." As in, "Ik ben voor de oorlog van huis gegaan" (I left home before the war) as a fairly standard explanation for expecting stuff to cost less.

Did you know (and I use the word "know" loosely, since this is a story whose roots in truth may be debatable) that in the war (you know, "the war" = WWII), Dutch people used to identify German spies by asking them to pronounce the word Scheveningen? Apparently they could not do this, and it exposed their Germanness. This doesn't surprise me, because a) it is very hard to pronounce Scheveningen if you don't speak Dutch, and b) so far in my experience German people's Dutch is niet zo goed...

Whoa. What a great trip you're having! I am pretty impressed at the helpfulness of the bike shops with such an esoteric problem. And then there's the spare tire...good luck! Save all tubes for patching!

The Selvaags arrive today for 5 days at the cabin. Kolbjorn, Ingunn, Bjorg, and Runhild. We're having cross-Atlantic cultural events this summer!

Fantastic trip: everything you descibe is deja vu... Even for you, Tracy, but at the time you were only 4 years old.
On Peter's "verrassing's menu" : Kibbelings are the salted cheeks of cod ( de ingezouten wangen van een kabeljauw) and "lekkerbekjes" are lightly breaded pan-fried haddock( gepaneerde, gebakken schelvis filet Elburg is very special: All the KAGA passengers stayed there one night anchored out on Veluwe Meer. If possible visit Spakenburg, and look at the "klederdracht" fabrics. I can also recommend eating local specialties there. Keep on biking!

What a great trip! You'll remember it more for the rain...painful as it might be at the time. Sounds like you are coping marvelously. The trailer falling off the bike is troubling! I hope it stays together! I'm jealous of all the great scenery and food! Roll on!
